ARRIVAL

Hatiras
This is the original, full length album that introduced Hatiras to the world. It featured the house hits Spaced Invader, The Anthem, Digital Doom, The Game, Don't Be Afraid, Lost In Space and many more. This album was undeniably one of the most influential house albums of the time, inspiring a whole genre of spaced-out, filtered disco house and even changing the course of other electronic genres such as drum and bass. Raw, unrelenting, rule-breaking, energetic and even lunatic - Arrival is a must-have for any true fan of Hatiras - in fact, it's a must-have for any true fan of future-pushing house music!

REVIEWS

ARRIVAL FEATURE BY DAWN GLUSKIN/JIVE MAGAZINE

Hatiras, who has come to be known for what he calls “a unique style of pumpin', funky, tracky House” has had many successful releases, including the tracks he is most well known for, last years ‘Spaced Invaders’ on Defected. He’s been fortunate enough to play his music to lively crowds all around the world from South Africa to North America, and he’s also won a Canadian Juno award, equivalent to the American Grammy, last year for ‘Best Dance.’ With all he’s accomplished, Hatiras compares his success to a roller-coaster ride saying, “being an artist is funny. You have to be able to focus on your work and keep plugging away regardless of what people think or say about what you’re doing. Some people will understand my musical vision and others won’t. There will also be times when my material is the hottest thing and times when I seem to fall off the face of the Earth.”

Part of Hatiras’ success in making music can be tied into the fact he always tries to mix things up in the studio. He tells us, “for me, producing isn’t about sticking to a plan or a specific style … it’s about the challenge of trying out different techniques and experimenting. I’ve come to learn the basic language of music production pretty thoroughly, but I get bored easily. So, I try to stay away from a formula for producing music. Every track is a new experiment with either a new piece of gear, new program, or new way of doing things. Once a producer finds a formula and sticks tightly to it their music starts to sound the same each time. It’s how you break the rules and do things differently that sets you apart from the rest.”

What is that Hatiras digs about House music? He tells us, “It’s gotta be the feeling of anticipation, the kick drum and bass, the funkiness, the hook... all that.” But he gets into other genres as well telling us, “I appreciate all forms of music and take influences from everywhere. I’ve always loved drum and bass, there’s some cool electro stuff coming out these days and believe it or not I’ve been analyzing a lot of rock, punk and retro eighties too.”

Aside from the role of Producer and DJ, Hatiras also co-founder the Toronto promotion group, Liquid Adrenaline, whose parties drew in crowds of up to 10,000 people. Because of this affiliation, Hatiras was able to build many important relationships in the industry. When asked if still doing any promoting, he says, “No, I gave up promoting events over a year ago. It was challenging and fun but the scene evolved to the point where it was no longer possible to throw large scale parties. That doesn’t necessarily mean that I won’t ever play the promoter’s role again … just not in the immediate future.” He goes on to say about Toronto, “most of the scene is in the clubs right now, but a lot of the parties are operated by big corporate sponsors. However, there seems to be a new kind of underground slowly emerging … it’s almost as if the scene here is in a secret rebuilding stage.”

‘Arrival,’ Hatiras’ much-anticipated full-length album, which just released a little earlier this year, includes collaborations with Bad Boy Bill and Delano. In his words, “it’s a fun, themed triple pack I produced primarily for DJs but also for the home listener … I like to be diverse, and you’ll get to hear that on my new album. Even though you can say there’s a trademark Hatiras sound I like to stray from it and explore.”
